A Mediterranean Sunset

Sunsets are things of magic. Featured on so many poems, songs and paintings, it’s something that’s always marveled mankind. Ancient cultures believed sundown and sunrise to be magical hours where the Gods met and the gates to other worlds would open. It was the time when the Sun god would go out and rest, while the Moon goddess emerged and tried to illuminate her realm the best she could. One of the first memories I have is of a beach at sundown, strangely enough, and it’s probably one of the first pictures I ever took. Of course this was before I had any idea of notions like exposure to light on film and angles and stuff like that, so I doubt the picture was any good. But it’s still an interesting landmark.

Why sunsets took a more important role in our culture than sunrises, is a matter of discussion. Scholars tend to attribute it to many different reasons, from the more ethereal fact that in ancient times the Moon gods were considered more important than the Sun gods, since people needed more protection during the dark, to more down to earth explanations that people were simply awake for sundown more often than they were for sunsets.
